Islamic Coalition Pushes for Democratic Reforms: Two-Term PM Limit and Swift Elections Proposed

In a significant political development, leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam and six other Islamic parties met with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government, to discuss potential reforms aimed at enhancing the democratic process in Bangladesh.

The meeting, which took place on Saturday afternoon, saw the Islamic party leaders arriving at the state guest house Jamuna at 3:00 PM. The discussions focused on two major proposals: limiting the tenure of the prime minister to two terms and implementing necessary reforms before organizing national elections.

Maulana Mamunul Haque, the leader of Hefazat-e-Islam and secretary general of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, addressed the media following the meeting. He emphasized the importance of the proposed two-term limit for the prime minister, stating that it would promote democratic principles and prevent the concentration of power.

“We have proposed that no individual should serve more than two terms as the prime minister. This is crucial for maintaining a healthy democratic process,” said Mamunul Haque.

He also highlighted the need for timely reforms and the organization of national elections. “We stressed the importance of implementing reforms within a reasonable timeframe and holding the national elections without unnecessary delays,” he added.

The meeting with Dr. Yunus marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing political discourse in Bangladesh, as various parties seek to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process. The proposals put forth by Hefazat-e-Islam and the six Islamic parties reflect a collective effort to strengthen the country’s democratic framework.

As the nation awaits further developments, the call for a two-term limit and election reforms is expected to generate significant discussion among political stakeholders and the public alike.
